Joseph Campbell

Growing up in country Victoria in the 1950s was a bit like growing up in a hidden valley. Little penetrated my world, a world which imposed its own structures on the individual. Educating women was believed to be a waste and the local ministers, teachers and police combined to reinforce the dragon 'Thou shalt not'. Luckily for me, my parents intuitively broke those patterns and in so doing enabled me to break free of the mould that would have crushed creativity.

However, it was not until I read the work of Joseph Campbell, 30 years later, that I understood that they had laid the groundwork for me to quit the old place and follow my bliss. The moment of truth dawned when I happened upon The Joseph Campbell Companion for it was upon reading this that I understood that the privilege of my lifetime was being permitted to be who I am. Within these pages I found a life companion: a companion who has guided me and helped me to see that some of my failures were moments that shaped the creative life I live today.

The Joseph Campbell Companion: Reflections on the Art of Living by Diane K. Osbon is my destiny book. Within it are the laws that I live by.
