Katie FfordeBy Nicola Warwick |

I first came across Katie Fforde because of the appealing cover on her first book. I loved the painting of a brown-haired young woman (who resembles Sigourney Weaver) in a country kitchen setting. And the title Living Dangerously was intriguing. Yet it took a few more weeks and a few more visits to Waterstone's before it was on my shopping list. I started reading it and wished I'd not waited so long. Living Dangerously falls into my personal category of truly unputdownable books. Polly Cameron as a thirty-something singleton reminded me a little of me and David, the character with whom she has a love/hate, on/off relationship, was terribly Darcyesque and would have female readers swooning as much as they did over Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice. I enjoyed Living Dangerously so much that I did something I'd never done before: wrote to the author to say how much I loved the book. Since then Katie became one of the contributors to life's little luxuries and we met at the book launch at the Groucho Club in London. Recently I visited her at her home in Gloucestershire and she kindly agreed to an interview. I re-read Katie's books often--it's rather nice to be able to read someone's work when you've been lucky enough to meet them as well. I can scarcely wait for her next novel but I'm going to have to--it's due out some time in 1999.
