One Woman's Writing Retreat

Claudia Marinelli

by Lisa Pinckard

Claudia Marinelli is an award-winning teacher and writer who lives near Rome, Italy. She began her writing career in earnest when she and her family returned to Italy from New York after having spent eight years in New York while her husband completed his residency. Once back home and settled, she resumed her career, covering everything from creative writing, accounting, and children's writing to teaching her native Italian to beginners.

Her short stories and poetry have been published in many Italian publications, many of the aforementioned short stories garnering awards. When she finally decided to write a full-length novel, she thought her experiences in America would make an excellent book, and she was right.

950 49th Street, Brooklyn, New York tells of her arrival to New York with her husband Umberto, their two children, and a third on the way. With her husband spending most of his hours at the hospital completing his residency, Claudia, learned the language, and managed to maneuver through a notoriously hectic, foreign city, forging friendships along the way--some that last to this day.

Claudia is currently a teacher at the Italian High School for Accountants, and teacher of Creative Writing at the Bracciano Public Library.
