One Woman's Writing Retreat: Laurie Crawford Stone

Columnist

About Laurie Crawford Stone

Laurie Crawford Stone lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with her husband Roger and their six cats, Keisha, Coco, Frankie, Lucy, Cooper and Winston. Laurie has written a number of guest editorials and letters about animal issues. She was a columnist for the now defunct Icon newspaper in Iowa City. Her essay on vegetarianism, part of a collection of essays entitled Voices From The Garden, was published in October 2001. Other contributors include: Ingrid Newkirk (founder of PETA: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Howard Lyman, (Lyman's testimony on The Oprah Winfrey Show revealed the deadly impact of the livestock industry on our well-being), Jane Velez-Mitchell (award-winning TV journalist and founder of VegTV.com),  and others.

Laurie was a co-founder and President of Animal Advocates of Iowa ("AAI"), an animal advocacy group, that was in existence from July 1997-April 2004. Animal Advocates of Iowa was a non-profit 501C3 corporation. The group worked to end animal abuse, neglect and exploitation via prevention, education and intervention. Their Web site included information and links about the following topics: companion animals, feral cats, animals in entertainment, urban wildlife and factory farming/vegetarianism. The site can now be found at BelovedAnimals.com.  A strong focus is spay/neuter. Some group members foster and place stray and homeless animals. Animals available for adoption can be seen at http://www.can.petfinder.org.

Laurie has educated herself about cat health and behavior. She has written papers for AAI's Web site and counseled hundreds of cat guardians. Her work with veterinarians has resulted in assisting in an emergency Cessarian section (13 puppies) and observing many other surgeries.

Laurie has served on several citizen task forces including the deer task force which recommended non-lethal methods of addressing the human/deer conflict, and the animal control task force which will recommend incentives for spay/neuter and stronger penalties for animal abuse and neglect.

Prior to dedicating herself to animal advocacy full time, Laurie worked in a legal capacity for several corporations. Laurie graduated with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1983. She was a litigator for a short time and then entered the corporate world. She has worked for Telecom USA, MCI and Rockwell Collins. Her last corporate position was Senior Vice President and Corporate Counsel for National Propane, a multi-state Fortune 500 Company.

Before attending law school, Laurie was a counselor and also worked at the local slaughterhouse. Her experiences at the slaughterhouse were instrumental in her conversion to vegetarianism and the beginning of her activism.

Because she believes that information and education are the keys to change, Laurie is focused on putting in writing what she has learned about society and animal issues.

One of Laurie's essays is now published in the anthology Angel Cats: Divine Messengers of Comfort.
