  About the Webmaster

My photo of a coyote taken at the original Prairie Den location in Iowa.

Welcome to my virtual home away from home for those who follow the creative path. I have no brochures for you since this getaway exists only in cyberspace. It's a quiet place to escape from the busy world and find inspiration or discover new resources that may help you in your craft.

The philosophy behind the site is mentoring. We are writers who interview professionals, encourage creativity, and use the Web to educate, learn, network, research, and market our work. In 2007, we plan to offer workshops and retreats that involve many aspects of creativity that will benefit both readers and writers.

I (secretly) write novels and poetry along with the many interviews, reviews, and articles that appear on the site.  Some of my work has been published at WriteMovies, Soul Food Cafe, the former Everyday Warriors, and in Prairie Winds Magazine.  I also have a degree in horiticulture with an emphasis on landscape design. Formerly a dance major, choreographer, and Thespian, I now compete in dancesport as a hobby. I also enjoy photography and am testing my skills in 3D art. One could say I'm kind of a Renaissance woman. Webmastering has been like coloring for me.

My family tree includes a Welsh poetess, a grandmother who was a professional artist, oil painter, and internationally known doll-maker, a sister who carried on the doll-making tradition in the family and has won awards in New York City for her work. My mother was a portrait artist. My grandfather  sketched. My nephew sketches, paints, acts, writes songs and novels. Tradition carries on to the next generation with nieces who are learning to choreograph and have an interest in literature, Web design, and writing. The theme running through my life has been always to support the arts.  What a perfect niche I've found online where the emphasis is on communication, freedom of expression, collaboration and multimedia. In 2003, I founded Prairie Den Publishing, LLC, so that artists could support each other's work and have a voice through electronic publishing. Prairie Den is a free electronic magazine provided by that company.

My sincere thanks goes to: Ryp Walters, for giving me this domain in 1996 and for continuing to sponsor these efforts into the new millennium. And to Alex Ross, founder of WriteMovies.com, for listing me as an honorary board member at his site. To New York City literary agent, Noah Lukeman for his support and listing prairieden.com in The Plot Thickens: 8 Ways to Bring Fiction to Life. A tremendous honor. To Penguin/Putnam for once listing One Woman's Writing Retreat as a top resource for women in their former writers' Inside Sessions course. And to my mother, to whom I dedicate this site.

This site has made large strides because of all my hard-working, international columnists, and the networking we've done with our guest authors that include interviews from professionals working in New York, Hollywood, Brazil, the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Ireland, and the list continues to grow.

Prairie Den, originally known as One Woman's Writing Retreat, was founded in 1996. It was named one of the 101 Best Web Sites for Writers by Writer's Digest Magazine in May, 1999.

Enjoy your experience at Prairie Den! Please return often and remember to bookmark this site. We have many new and exciting ideas planned for 2007.

Best Wishes,

Founder, Webmaster, and Managing Editor of Prairie Den (formerly called "One Woman's Writing Retreat")
